SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California State Capitol became a powerful stage for recognition as lawmakers and community leaders gathered for the 2026 Unsung Hero Awards. This significant event took place during a milestone year, marking the 100th anniversary of Black History Month. On the Assembly floor, members of the Legislative Black Caucus united to pass a resolution formally recognizing this centennial. Led by Assemblyman Isaac Bryan, the resolution honored the historical significance of Black contributions to California and the ongoing efforts being carried out in communities today.
However, it was not just about legislative proclamations; the true essence of the day was captured in the stories of the honorees. These individuals often impact their communities quietly, with their significant contributions going unrecognized by mainstream media. Among the spotlight moments was Assemblyman Bryan’s tribute to Leroy “Photo” Ham Hamilton, a distinguished Los Angeles photographer.

His body of work serves not only as an artistic endeavor but also as an archival tool that preserves the richness of Black culture. Through his lens, Hamilton documents the resilience and everyday beauty of his community, capturing everything from vibrant cultural gatherings to heartfelt, personal moments that characterize Black life across generations.

The Unsung Hero Awards were organized by the California Legislative Black Caucus, which brought together honorees from around the state. Each honoree was recognized by their respective legislators for dedicated service in areas like advocacy and leadership. Notable recipients included:
Marilyn Washington Harris, who was honored for her transformative work supporting families affected by violence. She has turned her personal experiences with loss into powerful advocacy for others. Vernell Brown received recognition for his longstanding commitment to uplifting the lives of those around him.
Dr. Jawane Hilton, a pastor, educator, and Carson councilmember, was acknowledged for his efforts at the intersection of faith and civic engagement. Each honoree’s story exemplifies a life dedicated to public service.
Cleveland “CJ” Johnson was celebrated for his extensive contributions to community service, while Lawndale’s mayor Robert Pullen-Miles was recognized for decades of dedicated public service. Bernice King Tingle received accolades for her commitment to community building through volunteerism, advancing efforts that strengthen community bonds.
Rosie Lee Hooks, a cultural leader connected to the Watts Towers Arts Center, was recognized for her role in preserving Black art in Los Angeles, while Dr. Suzanne Afflalo was honored for her tireless advocacy and work in education.

Captain Jason Stanley was recognized for his exemplary service and leadership, showcasing the commitment required in public safety. Vincent Hayes, a young volunteer firefighter, was celebrated for his brave actions during a medical emergency, highlighting that heroism can often be found in both youth and experience.

The Unsung Hero Awards showcased a profound array of talent and commitment among the honorees. This gathering inside the Capitol was stepping beyond mere policy-making; it became a tribute to human connection and community resilience. Attendees congregated afterwards at Brasserie du Monde, where the celebration of these heroes expanded into a shared acknowledgment of the impact that each of their efforts has on California’s cultural fabric.
As the event unfolded, it became a powerful reminder that the backbone of California’s communities is composed of individuals whose work may often be overlooked yet resonates deeply within the hearts of those they serve. By honoring Hamilton and celebrating the broader cohort of 2026 Unsung Heroes, the Legislative Black Caucus underscored a vital message — that Black history isn’t merely a chapter to be remembered; it is a narrative unfolding continuously through each act of courage, kindness, and dedication in real time.
