World Bank Supports Rural Infrastructure Development Project in Uzbekistan
Enhancing Life in Rural Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan — The Ministry of Economy and Finance, supported by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), is set to embark on a transformative journey through the “Rural Infrastructure Development” project. This initiative is designed to uplift the quality of life for residents in over 300 remote rural communities spread across five regions: Andijan, Namangan, Ferghana, Syrdarya, and Jizzakh.
Community-Driven Development
What sets this project apart is its community-driven focus. Rural communities are empowered to identify their own priority infrastructure needs, taking ownership of their development. This approach ensures that the construction or modernization of essential facilities—ranging from roads and bridges to water and electricity networks, schools, and kindergartens—directly reflects the needs of the residents. Such autonomy fosters a sense of belonging and responsibility among community members, paving the way for long-term commitment to upkeep and utilize these facilities.
A Landmark Visit in Ferghana Valley
The project’s significance was underscored during a recent visit by Najee Benhassin, the World Bank’s Regional Director for Central Asia, to the Uch Uyli mahalla in Pap district. Here, he stepped foot in a vibrant community of approximately 3,000 residents and participated in the ceremonial opening of a fully renovated kindergarten. The presentation of a symbolic key to the institution’s director marked a milestone in providing local children with improved educational facilities.
Infrastructure Improvements
The upgrades don’t stop with education. The project also spearheaded the construction of a covered football field at one of the local schools, highlighting the importance of sports and recreation for community health. Additionally, the laying of over seven kilometers of asphalt roads within the community has greatly enhanced transportation access, making it easier for residents to travel and connect with nearby areas.
Engaging with Local Communities
During his visit, Benhassin engaged in meaningful discussions with local residents, parents, and staff to assess the quality of the recently completed work. This interaction not only provided insight into the community’s sentiment towards the project but also demonstrated the World Bank’s commitment to understanding and addressing the specific needs of the people it serves.
