HARGEISA, Somaliland – The Government of Somaliland has ordered all undocumented foreign nationals, including illegal immigrants from Somalia, to leave the country within 10 days or face legal action.
The directive was announced in Hargeisa by Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed, commonly known as “Magaalo,” as part of a broader government effort to strengthen border management, enforce immigration laws, and enhance national security.
According to the Ministry of Interior and Security, all foreign nationals residing in Somaliland without valid residency permits, visas, or other legal authorization must either regularize their status or depart the country before the deadline expires.
Authorities warned that security agencies have been instructed to strictly enforce the order and take legal measures against individuals who remain in the country unlawfully after the grace period.
Government officials said the decision is intended to improve immigration oversight, protect national security interests, and ensure that all foreign residents comply with Somaliland’s laws and regulations.
“The government is committed to enforcing immigration laws and maintaining national security,” officials stated, emphasizing that lawful residents and foreign workers holding valid documentation will not be affected by the directive.
The announcement comes amid increasing efforts by Somaliland authorities to strengthen border controls and regulate migration flows across the Horn of Africa region. Security agencies are expected to conduct inspections and verification exercises following the expiration of the 10-day deadline.
The government urged all affected individuals to cooperate with authorities and take immediate steps to legalize their residency status or make arrangements to leave the country before enforcement measures begin.
The move underscores Somaliland’s determination to safeguard its borders, uphold the rule of law, and reinforce national security as it continues to strengthen its state institutions and immigration framework.
