The Journey of Unity: A Soccer Story at Lewiston High School

A Growing Community

In 2001, a significant transformation began in Lewiston, Maine, as Somali families started to settle in the city. Among those eager to foster connections was Mike McGraw, a dedicated teacher and soccer coach at Lewiston High School. On a summer day, a group of boys approached him on the soccer field with a burning desire to play. Their enthusiasm was palpable, but so were the challenges they faced.

Initial Hurdles and Determination

Initially, the boys were hesitant about the registration fees that marked participation. Some even declared, “We’re so good, we should be paid to play!” While their confidence shone through, practicalities held them back. However, after some discussion, they returned the following week, registration fees in hand, ready to embrace the sport they loved.

As the seasons rolled on, the boys faced another obstacle: the concept of tryouts was foreign to them. Yet, despite the uncertainty, they returned, practiced hard, and began carving a place for themselves on the teams. According to McGraw, the breakthrough came when the boys recognized that the coaching staff, including him, would be fair and supportive.

Bridging Cultural Gaps

The road to integration wasn’t just about soccer; it was about breaking down cultural barriers. McGraw noted that many students, constrained by language and trust issues, often kept to themselves. Boys who had faced disciplinary actions hid behind language difficulties, while girls tended to cluster at the back of classrooms.

In this complex social fabric, fostering trust became paramount. McGraw understood that simply teaching soccer skills wouldn’t suffice; they had to create an environment where the players felt they could depend on each other both on and off the field.

Building Trust On and Off the Field

Trust was the cornerstone of McGraw’s coaching philosophy. He recognized that creating bonds among the players required deliberate actions, both on the field and in the broader school environment. He took it upon himself to navigate through these cultural and linguistic barriers, framing seating arrangements and team dynamics to encourage players to interact and collaborate.

As they began to forge these connections, the team’s performance began to reflect this newfound unity. By 2013, the Lewiston boys soccer team was making headlines, contending for state championships—a journey that signified not just athletic success but a broader triumph of community integration.

The Crimson Determination

The 2014 season brought heartbreak. After a devastating loss against Cheverus High School, McGraw gathered his players and vowed they would return stronger the next year. “I saw about 25 heads nodding along,” he recalled, and they indeed returned with a fierce determination. The culmination of their hard work and unity led to a momentous victory in 2015, as they brought home their first state title.

The Pride of a Unified Team

For McGraw, the title win was not merely about the trophy—it represented the culmination of efforts in building trust and community among students from diverse backgrounds. Watching how these young men, many of whom had arrived without any knowledge of English or local customs, adapted, grew, and took on leadership roles was a source of immense pride for McGraw.

He often reminded his players, “What you do on the field reflects how a community should come together.” This sentiment transcended soccer; it became a cornerstone of their lives in Lewiston, emphasizing that collaboration and understanding can bridge even the widest divides.

A Lasting Legacy

The story of the Lewiston High School boys soccer team is a powerful testament to the influence of sports as a unifying force. It highlights how a deep-seated love for a game can break down barriers, instill trust, and foster community ties that extend beyond the pitch. In a world where cultural differences often create rifts, this narrative is a reminder of the potential for harmony through shared experiences and collective goals.
