DHL Group’s Strategic Investment in Sub-Saharan Africa: Paving the Way for Future Growth
DHL Group has recently announced a significant investment exceeding €300 million aimed at boosting operations in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This initiative underscores the region’s growing importance in global trade and reflects a strategic move to enhance infrastructure, service capabilities, and unlock new opportunities for businesses. The investment will touch multiple facets of DHL’s operations, encompassing DHL Express, DHL Global Forwarding, and DHL Supply Chain.
A Multi-Year Initiative to Transform Trade Landscape
The planned investment is a multi-year commitment focused on expanding DHL’s presence and capabilities across various sectors pivotal to the region’s economy. Key industries targeted include e-commerce, perishables, energy, and healthcare. This endeavor is aimed at not only improving service efficiency but also ensuring businesses can thrive in a rapidly evolving market landscape.
Confidence in Africa’s Trade Momentum
A recent report from the DHL Global Connectedness Tracker highlights Africa’s promising trade trajectory. In the first half of 2025, Sub-Saharan Africa witnessed a remarkable 10% year-on-year increase in trade value, far outpacing other global regions — North America lagged at 7% and South & Central America at 5%. The forecast anticipates trade volumes in the region growing at a robust pace of 4.3% annually from 2025 to 2029, marking it as the second-fastest growth region globally.
John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, emphasized the significance of this moment: “Africa is at a pivotal moment in its trade journey. Despite global volatility, the continent continues to show resilience and momentum. Our investment reflects confidence in Africa’s trajectory and DHL’s commitment to enabling the trade flows that drive inclusive growth.”
Expanding DHL’s African Networks
One of the primary components of DHL’s investment involves enhancing its networks throughout Africa. DHL Express plans to upgrade gateways and expand aviation capacity while improving time-definite coverage into emerging second-tier cities as part of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). This dedicated air network will reinforce connections between Africa and key global markets such as Europe and Asia, particularly strengthening trade corridors in countries like Ethiopia and Nigeria.
Similarly, DHL Global Forwarding is poised to enhance its logistical capabilities, specifically within the domains of energy, perishables, and healthcare. Building on its established freight networks and customs expertise, this initiative aims to fortify major African trade lanes.
Amadou Diallo, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding for the Middle East & Africa, remarked, “We are strengthening forwarding solutions with deeper local expertise and enhanced digital tools, giving clients clearer control of their shipments.”
Boosting Supply Chain Solutions
DHL Supply Chain is also set to expand its operations, particularly within South Africa. The initiative focuses on increasing capacity and introducing transport-led solutions with an emphasis on life sciences, healthcare, and third-party logistics.
According to Orkun Saruhanoglu, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Middle East & Africa, “By adding capacity and strengthening solutions, we’ll help customers manage risk and scale with confidence.” This strategic expansion aims to solidify DHL’s role as a pivotal player in the supply chain dynamics of the region.
Emphasizing Sustainable and Inclusive Trade
DHL is not just focused on enhancing operational capabilities; it is also committed to making trade more accessible and sustainable through its GoTrade initiative, which assists small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in navigating international markets. This includes providing vital training and customs support to empower local businesses.
The company is also piloting renewable energy solutions, exploring alternative fuels, and implementing AI-driven route optimization across its facilities. Hennie Heymans, CEO of DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa, stated, “Our focus is to be closer to customers and make cross-border shipping simpler and more reliable.”
With a comprehensive strategy that aims to reduce barriers and increase efficiency, DHL Group remains uniquely positioned to bridge African markets with the global trading community. The planned investment not only exemplifies the company’s strategic foresight but also highlights its commitment to nurturing the continent’s growth under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
