Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has extended an invitation to Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, for participation in the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum and a Leaders’ Summit scheduled to be held in Baku in May 2026. This initiative reflects Azerbaijan’s commitment to engaging with international partners on pressing global issues.
The invitation was delivered by Ambassador Elchin Amirbayov, the Special Envoy of the President of Azerbaijan. During their meeting, Youssouf expressed appreciation for the invitation and highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between Azerbaijan and the African Union (AU). This interaction marked a significant step in fostering stronger ties and promoting mutual interests.
Notably, the discussion between Youssouf and Amirbayov focused on deepening cooperation between the AU and Azerbaijan. They explored avenues for a prospective framework agreement aimed at enhancing strategic partnerships. This agreement is poised to facilitate joint initiatives that will address both African and Azerbaijani developmental priorities.
Youssouf acknowledged Azerbaijan’s advantages in digital innovation, public service transformation, trade facilitation, and advanced connectivity. These areas are crucial for Africa’s development ambitions, closely aligning with the AU’s reform agenda. The emphasis on technological transformation and efficient public services is particularly relevant in the context of many African nations striving for growth and modernization.
Amirbayov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s growing engagement across the African continent, underlining its vast potential for cooperation. He commended Youssouf’s leadership and expressed Azerbaijan’s eagerness to partner with the AU in meaningful ways. This commitment signifies Azerbaijan’s recognition of Africa as a key player on the global stage.
In addition to discussions with Youssouf, Ambassador Amirbayov met with Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie. During their meeting, they deliberated on the potential for expanding cooperation between Baku and Addis Ababa. Topics ranged from trade and investment to agriculture, highlighting a multifaceted approach to international partnerships.
This burgeoning collaboration between Azerbaijan and African nations illustrates the country’s strategic pivot towards building influential relationships beyond its immediate geographical sphere. Both the World Urban Forum and the Leaders’ Summit in 2026 present an excellent platform for dialogue, showcasing advancements in sustainable urban development and shared governance.
