AFCON 2027: Are CHAN Co-Hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda Prepared for the Larger Tournament?

The Rise of Fan Parks and Viewing Venues in African Football

In recent years, the passion for football in Africa has surged, with fans eager to support their teams, often leading to clamorous scenes outside stadiums. Recognizing this fervor, Nairobi, Kenya, took a commendable step by establishing fan parks where supporters without tickets could still enjoy the exciting atmosphere of the matches. These fan parks became an inclusive space for discussions, celebrations, and camaraderie, allowing fans to share their experiences together even if they couldn’t be in the stands.

Wanyama’s Insights on Fan Engagement

Former Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama has been vocal about the importance of enhancing fan engagement during tournaments, emphasizing the need for more viewing locations. He noted that during the tournament, fans showcased a strong desire to be part of the stadium experience. Wanyama suggested that fan zones are not just essential, but should be established early in the tournament to accommodate the overwhelming interest.

In a conversation with BBC Swahili, he stressed, “The zones shouldn’t be only in Nairobi but other areas in the country, because football fans aren’t only in Nairobi.” His insight reflects a growing understanding of the diverse fan base in Kenya, which extends well beyond the capital city.

Tanzania’s Hosting Experience

On a broader scale, Tanzania also had its chance to host matches during the tournament, with the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar stepping up as a last-minute venue. While it performed admirably, Tanzanian football commentator Juma Ayo rated his homeland’s efforts as “six out of 10.” He pointed out that while logistical arrangements, particularly around security, were well-managed, there was still room for improvement in areas such as ticketing.

Ayo highlighted a notable challenge regarding the adoption of e-ticketing platforms. Many fans were unfamiliar with the online purchasing process, which led to a lack of demand for digital tickets. He explained, “Going forward, fans in Tanzania will need to be educated on online ticketing, because many fans would rather buy physical tickets at the gate.” This presents an opportunity for future tournaments to enhance the fan experience by investing in awareness campaigns around e-ticketing.

Uganda’s Frustrations in Venue Selection

Meanwhile, Uganda’s experience as a host raised some eyebrows, especially as the sole venue was the Mandela National Stadium. Many fans and commentators felt that the country was “shortchanged” by being overlooked for high-profile matches such as the opening game and the final. This sentiment was echoed by journalist Fred Mwambu, who offered suggestions for improvement.

“Probably next time (in 2027) the first match of each country should also be an opening ceremony to showcase their culture,” he said. This idea encapsulates a broader desire not just for football, but also for a celebration of national heritage and community pride.

Emphasis on Inclusion and Accessibility

The overarching theme during discussions about the tournament experience revolves around enhancing inclusivity. With so many fans eager to engage with their national teams, providing accessible viewing options is critical. As Wanyama advocated for a spread of fan zones across various regions, it highlights the need for future tournaments to ensure no fan feels excluded.

Host countries must recognize that enthusiasm for football exists in every corner of their nations. By designing strategies that consider fan happiness, accessibility, and community engagement, they can create a rich, unified atmosphere that resonates with supporters everywhere.

As the fervor for football grows across the continent, the conversations surrounding fan experiences, engagement, and inclusion continue to evolve. The lessons learned from recent tournaments can help pave the way for more vibrant, accessible, and memorable experiences for fans in the future.
