Trade relations between Türkiye and African nations have reached impressive heights, with projections indicating a trade volume of $37 billion in 2024. Trade Minister Omer Bolat announced these figures at the 5th Türkiye-Africa Business and Economic Forum held in Istanbul, expressing ambitions to grow this figure to $40 billion by 2025. This remarkable growth reflects a strategic partnership that has expanded more than sevenfold since 2003, showcasing the potential and commitment both parties have toward enhancing their economic ties.
Substantial Infrastructure Investment Across Africa
A cornerstone of Türkiye’s expanding relationship with Africa lies in substantial investments made by Turkish construction firms. Over the years, these enterprises have completed 2,043 infrastructure projects valued at approximately $100 billion across the continent. These developments are pivotal in boosting economic growth in various African nations, establishing a robust commercial bridge that operates on principles of fairness, equality, and mutual benefit. Minister Bolat emphasizes that such partnerships are designed to yield win-win outcomes for both Türkiye and African nations.
Connectivity and Humanitarian Cooperation
Another driving force behind the growing relationship is enhanced connectivity. Turkish Airlines has revolutionized air travel within Africa, now servicing 62 destinations in over 40 countries. This increased connectivity not only facilitates business operations but also fosters diplomatic relations. Beyond trade and business ventures, Türkiye’s commitment to humanitarian efforts shines through its development aid projects. The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and various Turkish NGOs initiate numerous humanitarian projects across Africa, further cementing social and cultural ties and reflecting Türkiye’s dedication to collaborative growth.
Major Business Forum Fosters New Deals
The ongoing Türkiye-Africa Business and Economic Forum in Istanbul is a hive of activity, bringing together approximately 3,000 African businesspeople who engage in discussions with thousands of their Turkish counterparts. This event is significant, featuring dynamic panels focused on critical sectors, including textiles, infrastructure financing, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. With participation from several Turkish ministers in high-level bilateral meetings, this forum serves as an excellent platform for forging new economic partnerships and exploring collaborative opportunities.
