Afreximbank Enhances Initiative to Strengthen Africa’s Trade Gateway

Africa NewsAfreximbank Enhances Initiative to Strengthen Africa’s Trade Gateway

Afreximbank’s Strategic Move to Enhance Intra-Africa Trade

In a transformative step geared towards enhancing trade integration across the continent, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has appointed Real Sources Africa as an authorized agent of the Africa Trade Gateway. This appointment stems from the signing of a pivotal Agency Agreement, marking a significant milestone in the way African Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) engage with both regional and global markets.

The Vision Behind the Africa Trade Gateway

Felix Chege, CEO of Real Sources Africa, recently highlighted the essence of this partnership in an exclusive interview. He described the Africa Trade Gateway as an ecosystem designed to facilitate active participation in the continent’s free trade area initiatives. “While significant policy groundwork has been laid by the AFCFTA Secretariat, our current focus is on real, tangible transactions that empower SMEs, last-mile distributors, aggregators, and retailers,” Chege explained.

The Current Landscape of Intra-Africa Trade

Despite the promising frameworks established for trade across Africa, current intra-Africa trade stands at a mere 17%. This figure starkly contrasts with trade volumes observed in other regions globally. Chege is optimistic that initiatives like the Africa Trade Gateway can double this percentage within the next two to three years. “Our goal is to fast-track the identification and execution of opportunities, leveraging data-driven insights to increase the number of active trade participants,” he stated.

Role of Real Sources Africa in This Initiative

Real Sources Africa’s involvement is crucial in the implementation of the Africa Trade Gateway. By translating inquiries into actionable transactions, the company aims to build trust among trade participants through robust Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. This emphasis on trust is vital; it underpins financial transactions and is fortified through bank-backed platforms that secure funds until orders are confirmed and payments executed.

Overcoming Skepticism toward Digital Payment Systems

A significant barrier to trade in Africa has been skepticism surrounding digital payment systems, often rooted in a history of fraud and unfulfilled orders. Chege believes that the established trust associated with Afreximbank serves as a pillar upon which Real Sources Africa can build. “We utilize a trusted, bank-backed payment infrastructure,” he explained. “Both buyers and sellers can deposit funds into an escrow account, which are only released upon order confirmation, minimizing the risk for all parties.”

Addressing Concerns about Bureaucracy

Despite promising developments, concerns about the perceived bureaucracy in new trade platforms persist. Chege highlights the initiative’s focus on facilitating practical transactions as a means to alleviate these worries. “Real Sources Africa is committed to showing tangible results, one transaction at a time. We will provide on-ground support, working closely with traders, importers, and exporters to illustrate the simplicity and efficiency of using the Africa Trade Gateway,” he said.

Untapped Potential of Intra-Africa Trade

The collaboration between Afreximbank and Real Sources Africa arrives during a time when the potential for intra-Africa trade remains largely untapped. Chege is confident that by cultivating strong, credible trade ecosystems, the continent can eventually achieve trade volumes exceeding 50%. However, he emphasizes that achieving this goal starts with small, incremental successes. “We believe in handholding one transaction at a time, demonstrating the viability of this initiative,” he explained.

The Future of Trade in Africa

As these ambitious objectives unfold, the broader financial community eagerly anticipates the impact this collaboration will have on Africa’s economic fabric. By fostering deeper engagements among African nations, this initiative has the potential to unlock mutually beneficial trade possibilities, heralding a new era of trade across the continent.

The ambition is clear: through innovation and trust, the Africa Trade Gateway aims not just to increase trade volumes but to reshape the entire trade landscape within Africa.
