Türkiye’s Robust Support to Djibouti: Strengthening Ties Through Water and Energy
Türkiye has emerged as a key ally for Djibouti, particularly in the vital sectors of water management and energy infrastructure. Since 2017, Türkiye has taken significant steps to bolster Djibouti’s resilience against environmental challenges and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
The Ambouli Friendship Dam
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing water security, Türkiye commenced the construction of the Ambouli Friendship Dam in 2017, funded by state resources. This strategic project was designed to protect Djibouti City, where a staggering 75% of the country’s population resides, from the threat of flooding. The dam not only serves to mitigate flooding risks but also ensures a consistent supply of water, which is crucial for a rapidly growing urban center.
By 2020, the dam was fully operational, with its control handed over to the Djibouti government in the following year. Situated about 22 kilometers west of Djibouti City’s bustling heart, the dam plays a critical role in recharging underground water reserves, thus supporting the area’s sustainable water needs.
Turkish Influence in Djibouti’s Economy
Beyond infrastructure projects, over ten Turkish companies are currently making their mark in Djibouti, particularly in sectors like textiles, construction, and tourism. These enterprises have embarked on multiple initiatives, transforming the landscape of the country with new hotels, parks, and improved transportation networks.
For instance, the Best Western Premier DJ Hotel in the capital, along with the adjacent park, was constructed by Turkish contractors, adding value to local tourism while providing job opportunities. Additionally, various Turkish municipalities, including Konya and Çankaya, have established sister city relationships with Djibouti Municipality, further solidifying the bilateral ties.
Cultural Symbols of Friendship
The Abdülhamid II Mosque and its complex, erected by the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation, stands as a significant cultural symbol reflecting the deep-rooted friendship between Türkiye and Djibouti. This establishment not only serves as a place of worship but also embodies the shared values and solidarity between the two nations.
Expanding Trade Relations
The trade relationship between Türkiye and Djibouti has flourished, particularly in recent years. Key exports from Türkiye include iron and steel, electrical devices, machinery, hygiene products, and various food commodities like safflower and sunflower oils, flour, and pulses. As of 2023, Türkiye ranked as the fourth-largest exporter to Djibouti, reflecting a growing partnership.
Despite this growth, it’s important to note that a significant imbalance persists in the trade dynamics. As articulated by Sadak Mohamud Hassan Gafow, a Somali PhD student, Türkiye exported goods worth approximately $389 million to Djibouti, while imports from Djibouti remained minimal. This discrepancy underscores the limited export capacity of Djibouti’s economy, which primarily relies on imports.
Joint Economic Initiatives
To further bridge this gap, recent meetings such as the Türkiye-Djibouti Joint Economic Commission, which convened in February 2023, have resulted in 15 agreements across various sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. Notably, the trade volume between the two nations has shown significant growth, rising from $60 million in 2014 to an anticipated $500 million by 2024.
The increasing cooperation signals a future filled with potential. Djibouti’s strategic geographic location offers numerous opportunities for Turkish investors, who are encouraged to explore this emerging market.
Infrastructure and Development Contributions
The stability of Türkiye-Djibouti relations can be attributed to several factors. Diplomatic stability, Türkiye’s proactive role in development projects, and the establishment of logistical networks are pivotal in facilitating regional trade.
