Energy & InfrastructureAfrica Energy Indaba 2026 Marks Major Milestone with Presidential Keynote and Robust Continental Engagement

The Africa Energy Indaba 2026: Shaping the Future of Energy

The 18th edition of the Africa Energy Indaba, held from March 3–5, 2026, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), was a resounding success. It gathered policymakers, ministers, investors, utilities, and industry leaders from across Africa and beyond, solidifying its status as Africa’s premier energy event.

Recognised as a strategic platform for high-level dialogue, the Indaba aimed at fostering investment engagement and practical solutions tailored to advance Africa’s energy future. This year’s event was particularly notable for the emphasis placed on renewable resources and technological advancements necessary to achieve energy security on the continent.

Presidential Keynote Address: A Call to Action

A highlight of the 2026 Indaba was the poignant Presidential Keynote Address delivered by H.E. President Cyril Ramaphosa. His speech spotlighted the critical importance of energy security, infrastructure development, and regional cooperation in unlocking Africa’s economic potential.

In his address, President Ramaphosa reflected on Africa’s abundant natural resources—solar, wind, hydropower, gas, and critical minerals. He pointed out the immense opportunity these resources present, positioning the continent as a competitive energy producer while simultaneously addressing developmental needs. He emphasized that despite these resources, over 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity, underscoring the pressing need for accelerated investments.

Major Announcements and Strategic Developments

The 2026 Africa Energy Indaba was marked by significant announcements and collaborative partnerships that further emphasize its role as a catalyst for energy investment and innovation.

Mission 300 Commitment Expanded

As part of the Mission 300 Day, The Rockefeller Foundation announced an additional US$10 million to support the initiative led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank, which aims to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. This commitment reflects the growing momentum behind Mission 300 and affirms the necessity of global partnerships to bridge Africa’s energy access gap.

Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement

During the Nuclear Forum, South Africa’s Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and Russia’s Rosatom entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster cooperation in nuclear skills development, training, and research efforts. This partnership aligns with South Africa’s nuclear ambitions and emphasizes the urgency of developing a new generation of nuclear professionals while promoting gender diversity in the field.

Global Nuclear Capacity Commitment

A significant milestone during the Nuclear Forum was the signing of a declaration to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050, in collaboration with the World Nuclear Association. This declaration underscores the international community’s growing recognition of nuclear power as a crucial component of global energy security and decarbonisation strategies.

Advancing Continental Infrastructure and Investment

A highlight of the Indaba was the Ministerial Roundtable on the Africa Ten-Year Infrastructure Investment Plan for Cross-Border Interconnectivity (TYIIP). This forum aimed to expedite key transmission and power infrastructure projects across the continent, improve project preparation mechanisms, and mobilise both public and private investments to enable regional energy integration.

Participants unanimously agreed that cross-border interconnectivity and regional power pools are essential in delivering reliable and affordable electricity across Africa, enhancing both economic development and the quality of life for millions.

South Africa Energy Investment Opportunities

The Indaba was also an important venue for the South African Investment Forum, hosted by the Department of Electricity and Energy. This forum showcased a plethora of investment opportunities within South Africa’s dynamic energy landscape. Investors gained insights into upcoming projects spanning renewable energy, gas-to-power developments, transmission infrastructure, and nuclear energy expansion.

A Platform for Strategic Energy Dialogue

The Africa Energy Indaba 2026 successfully brought together diverse energy stakeholders to explore pathways for:

  • Strengthening energy security and resilience across Africa
  • Accelerating energy investment and project development
  • Advancing regional power integration and cross-border infrastructure
  • Supporting Africa’s just and inclusive energy transition
  • Unlocking the potential of gas-to-power, renewables, storage, and grid expansion

Government leaders, development finance institutions, and technology innovators participated in high-level discussions and ministerial roundtables aimed at driving the continent’s energy agenda forward.

Key Outcomes and Strategic Discussions

Several central themes and outcomes emerged from the 2026 Indaba, including:

Energy Investment Acceleration

Delegates stressed the urgent need for a significant increase in investments targeting generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure to meet Africa’s burgeoning energy demand.

Regional Integration and Infrastructure Development

Ministers and industry leaders highlighted the critical nature of reinforcing regional power pools and cross-border interconnectors to enhance reliability and unlock the continent’s energy markets.

Energy Transition Aligned with Industrial Growth

A pivotal message was that the energy transition in Africa must align with industrialisation and job creation while simultaneously achieving sustainability goals.

Strategic Role of Natural Gas

The Africa Gas Forum reiterated the position of natural gas as a transition fuel, capable of supporting electricity generation and fostering industrial growth, ensuring energy stability throughout the continent.

Public-Private Partnerships

An emphasis was placed on fostering collaboration among governments, investors, and development partners to accelerate project implementation and mobilise significant energy financing.

A Bright Energy Future for Africa

The Africa Energy Indaba continues to be a cornerstone in shaping the continent’s energy policy landscape and investment framework. By uniting key decision-makers and stakeholders, it serves as a breeding ground for new energy deals, partnerships, and practical solutions to address Africa’s pressing energy challenges.

As demand for energy across Africa escalates and the global energy landscape evolves, the Africa Energy Indaba remains dedicated to promoting dialogue, collaboration, and investment essential for propelling the continent’s energy future.
