EU Special Representative’s Official Visit to Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia: On November 30 and December 1, the EU Delegation in Somalia welcomed Annette Weber, the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, for a pivotal two-day official visit. The visit aimed to strengthen ties and foster discussions on pressing issues pertinent to Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region.

Meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

Nestled in the heart of Mogadishu at Villa Somalia, a significant dialogue unfolded between Annette Weber and H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of the Federal Government of Somalia. Their discussions centered around critical political developments within the nation, the ongoing security transition, and the evolving dynamics in the regional landscape. This face-to-face meeting underscored the importance of collaborative dialogue in addressing Somalia’s multifaceted challenges.

Engagement with United Nations Representatives

Further expanding the depth of her visit, Annette Weber convened additional consultations with James Swan, the Special Representative for Somalia and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (UNTMIS). Their discussions were laser-focused on delineating United Nations priorities while emphasizing the necessity of enhanced international coordination. This collaboration is vital for bolstering Somalia’s state-building initiatives, reflecting a unified approach to fostering stability and governance.

Focused Conversations on Security Cooperation

Another key aspect of the visit was the engagement with Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, the Officer in Charge of the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). During their meeting, the two leaders examined the ongoing cooperation between the African Union and European Union. They specifically addressed Somali-led security priorities and deliberated on strategies to tackle operational and funding challenges. Both parties expressed a firm commitment to continue their joint efforts aimed at promoting stability and resilience within Somalia.

Commitment to Peace and Governance Reforms

The visit symbolized more than just political discussions; it highlighted the European Union’s steadfast partnership with Somalia. The emphasis was on advancing peace, implementing governance reforms, and fostering constructive dialogue throughout the Horn of Africa. With the EU’s support, Somalia aims to navigate its path toward sustainable development and improved security.

Through these meetings, Annette Weber reinforced the notion that collaborative efforts and shared responsibilities are foundational to achieving long-term peace and stability in a region fraught with complexities.
