Boosting Food Security in Mauritania: The Role of the Arab Africa Trade Bridges Program
Introduction to the Arab Africa Trade Bridges Program
The Arab Africa Trade Bridges (AATB) Program is a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing food security and sustainable agricultural practices across Arab and African member states. Launched with the guidance of key international organizations—including the African Export-Import Bank and the Islamic Development Bank—this program seeks to foster economic resilience and regional integration through collaborative cross-border projects.
Partnership for Agricultural Advancement
A notable initiative under the AATB Program is the recent strategic partnership established in Mauritania. In collaboration with the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) and the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), the project aims to amplify wheat seed multiplication, improve agricultural productivity, and bolster the wheat value chain. This partnership highlights a commitment to reducing dependence on wheat imports and enhancing local production capabilities.
Memorandum of Understanding
The formalization of this project occurred in November 2023 through a Memorandum of Understanding, co-signed by the involved organizations and Mauritania’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty. By blending ACSAD’s technical expertise with the financial resources of AATB, the initiative aims to significantly increase the availability of high-yield, locally produced wheat seeds.
Objectives of the Wheat Seed Multiplication Project
The overarching goal of the wheat seed multiplication project is to establish a comprehensive program dedicated to multiplying high-quality wheat seeds in Mauritania. Specific objectives include:
- Enhanced Local Production: The initiative encourages the cultivation of certified ACSAD wheat varieties, focusing on both hard and soft wheat strains.
- Reduction of Imported Seeds: By promoting the production of locally adapted seeds, the project aims to curb reliance on imported varieties—a crucial step toward food sovereignty.
- Development of Climate-Resilient Varieties: The introduction of a national wheat breeding program seeks to create high-yield varieties that can withstand local climatic challenges, such as drought and extreme temperatures.
Improving Agricultural Practices
Beyond seed multiplication, the project emphasizes the importance of improving agricultural practices throughout the wheat value chain. Key efforts include:
- Harvest and Post-Harvest Management: Strategies will be put in place to minimize losses during harvesting and storage—crucial for elevating overall productivity.
- Quality Control: The project aims to supply high-quality seeds for broader agricultural use, while reducing genetic contamination that can occur during cultivation.
- Capacity Building: Institutional frameworks governing wheat production and marketing will undergo modernization, reinforcing the agricultural ecosystem in Mauritania.
Initial Outcomes and Future Plans
As part of the 2023-2024 agricultural season, ACSAD facilitated the cultivation of improved wheat varieties on a 20-hectare site in the Arkez region. The first harvest yielded over 16 tons of both soft and hard wheat, which have now been earmarked for seed multiplication in the upcoming season.
A steering committee formed by representatives from ACSAD, ITFC, and the Ministry meets regularly to evaluate progress. Their discussions focus on expanding the geographic scope of cultivation, launching new breeding programs, and enhancing technical capacities nationally.
A Template for Regional Success
The wheat seed multiplication project exemplifies the AATB Program’s mission to implement transformative projects that bolster economic resilience and promote self-reliance among member countries. By facilitating regional cooperation and advancing sustainable agricultural methodologies, the program addresses both immediate development needs and the long-term vision of food security.
This initiative not only serves as a crucial intervention in Mauritania but also sets a replicable model for other nations facing similar agricultural challenges. By investing in local capacities and resources, the AATB Program reinforces its role as a critical player in fostering inclusive and sustainable growth across both Arab and African regions.
