Celebrating Young Talent: Jenna-Lee Atkinson Shines at the African Youth Games

A Rising Star from Durban North

Meet Jenna-Lee Atkinson, a remarkable 14-year-old karateka from Durban North, who showcased her talent on an international stage at the African Youth Games held in Luanda, Angola, in December. Proudly representing South Africa, Jenna-Lee earned a silver medal in the team kata event alongside her teammates, Farah Seedat and Yathiksha Sewpersad. This achievement highlights the dedication and hard work of these young athletes in a sport that blends discipline, skill, and artistry.

The Art of Kata

Kata, an essential component of karate, involves a detailed choreographed pattern of movements that practitioners perform in unison. In team kata events, synchronization among participants is paramount, requiring countless hours of practice and cooperation. Jenna-Lee’s commitment to her craft was evident as she expressed her pride in the team’s accomplishment. “To be able to accomplish a team silver was amazing. The level of competition was quite tough,” she remarked, reflecting on the inspiring performances of competitors from other countries.

Individual Performance and Growth

While team achievements are often celebrated, Jenna-Lee’s performance in the individual kata event is equally noteworthy. Placing fifth overall in a field of strong competitors, she demonstrated resilience and a commitment to personal excellence. “I feel I performed at the best of my abilities. I wasn’t quite prepared for the individual, but I gave it my all,” she stated candidly. For Jenna-Lee, this was a learning experience — the first time competing at the African Youth Games — and her passion for karate shines through her hopeful and determined outlook.

Training and Support

Training under the guidance of esteemed instructors Renshi Brando Pillay and Hanshi Sonny Pillay, president of Karate South Africa, Jenna-Lee is a proud member of the Shotokan Karate-do International South Africa (SKISA). Their mentorship has been instrumental in her development, instilling not just technical skills but also the values of perseverance and teamwork. The rigorous training regimens and supportive environment fostered by her coaches allowed Jenna-Lee and her teammates to flourish in competitions.

Future Competitions

Jenna-Lee’s journey doesn’t stop with the African Youth Games. In February, she is set to travel to Fujairah, UAE, for the Karate One-Youth League competition, followed by participation in a similar event in Harare, Zimbabwe, in March. The anticipation of these upcoming events fuels her determination to improve. The trio of Jenna-Lee, Farah, and Yathiksha will also be gearing up for a significant opportunity at the Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal, scheduled for October.

Team South Africa’s Stellar Performance

At the African Youth Games, Team South Africa made headlines by topping the medals table, securing an impressive total of 99 medals — 45 gold, 38 silver, and 16 bronze. This outstanding success across various sporting codes such as swimming, athletics, karate, weightlifting, badminton, cycling, and tennis underscores the depth of talent present in the South African youth athletics arena.
