Ron DeSantis, born Ronald Dion DeSantis, is the eldest of two children hailing from a modest background in Florida. His mother, Karen DeSantis, worked as a nurse, while his father, Ronald Daniel DeSantis, was employed as an installer of Nielsen TV ratings boxes. From an early age, DeSantis demonstrated a competitive spirit, particularly in sports. He excelled in baseball, playing as both a third baseman and pitcher. In 1991, his prowess helped the Dunedin youth team qualify for the Little League World Series, although they faced defeat in the quarterfinals.
Continuing his athletic pursuits, DeSantis attended Yale University, where he not only played baseball but also captained the varsity team. His academic journey culminated in a degree in history in 2001. After graduation, he briefly worked as a teacher at a preparatory school, a role that likely honed his communication and leadership skills.
In 2004, DeSantis joined the U.S. Navy, becoming an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps while concurrently pursuing a law degree at Harvard University, which he earned in 2005. His military career featured significant deployment to Guantánamo Bay, where he worked at a controversial detention facility, as well as a stint in Iraq, serving as a legal advisor to a Navy SEAL commander. His military service earned him a Bronze Star for meritorious service, underscoring his commitment to duty. After leaving active duty in 2010, he remained in the Navy Reserves and married Casey Black, a TV reporter and local news anchor. They have three children.
Governor of Florida and 2024 Presidential Run
The political landscape shifted significantly for DeSantis when he received Donald Trump’s endorsement in 2018 while running for governor of Florida. Initially regarded as an underdog, he managed to secure the Republican primary despite facing challenges. He resigned from his position in the House of Representatives to concentrate on the gubernatorial election, which turned out to be fiercely competitive. DeSantis faced Andrew Gillum, a progressive Democrat seeking to become Florida’s first African American governor. The campaign was marked by heated debates, with DeSantis frequently accused of racism by critics, a charge he vehemently denied. Ultimately, he won the contest by a narrow margin, finishing with 49.6% of the vote compared to Gillum’s 49.2%.
Upon taking office in January 2019, DeSantis quickly gained national headlines due to his polarizing policies, especially surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. He opted to lift restrictions earlier than many other governors, although he claimed to implement protective measures for the elderly. Critics expected adverse outcomes, but Florida’s death rate remained within the national average, and the state’s economy fared relatively well compared to its peers.
DeSantis’s administration also focused on election integrity, leading to the establishment of the Office of Election Crimes and Security in 2022. This move sparked concerns among Democrats and voting rights advocates who feared it might be used to suppress minority voting.
Culture Wars and Legislative Actions
The governor’s term became increasingly characterized by his involvement in the so-called “culture wars.” In 2022, he oversaw the passage of the Parental Rights in Education Act, which limited discussions around sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools. Although supporters praised this initiative, critics dubbed it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, with Disney, one of Florida’s largest employers, publicly opposing it. In response, DeSantis took steps to revoke the company’s self-governing status and tax breaks, stirring a debate about the potential implications for local residents.
DeSantis also championed the Individual Freedom Act, known as the Stop WOKE Act, designed to protect Floridians from discrimination and what he termed “woke indoctrination.” This included a ban on teaching critical race theory, a contentious topic across the nation. In January 2023, he made headlines by banning Advanced Placement courses focusing on African American studies, claiming that the curriculum was inaccurate and violated state law.
Additionally, he enacted legislation limiting abortion access, restricting the procedure after 15 weeks, a move that intensified his political profile following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. DeSantis even made headlines for sending undocumented migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in a controversial bid to highlight immigration issues, a move that saw mixed reactions across the political spectrum.

As DeSantis continued to implement his conservative agenda, he was seen as a potential contender for the 2024 presidential election. However, he first faced reelection as governor in 2022 against Charlie Crist, a former governor who had switched parties. In February 2023, he released The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, further emphasizing his policy initiatives and vision. Initially, DeSantis entered the race with considerable momentum and high expectations.
