In the heart of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a legacy of activism and civil rights has left an indelible mark on the community. Throughout the 1960s, the NAACP Youth marched outside the Northcrest shopping center, fervently protesting the non-hiring of African Americans. Concurrently, the Ministerial Alliance organized boycotts and walks down Calhoun Street, advocating for the desegregation of Fort Wayne Community Schools. Visit the African / African-American Historical Society Museum
The AAAHSM, affectionately known as “AWESOME,” houses Fort Wayne’s largest public collection of African Art and preserves many historic items and documents. Don’t miss the Civil Rights room, which pays homage to the efforts of Dr. King and other activists.

Take a moment to visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bridge, a beautiful structure leading into downtown Fort Wayne on Clinton St. Read the plaques that honor Dr. King’s legacy and contribution to civil rights.
Also, stop by the Pillars of Hope and Justice sculpture by Shane Allbritton and Norman Lee on Ewing Street, which commemorates Dr. King’s visit to Fort Wayne on June 5, 1963.
