The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland as a sovereign state, describing the move as serving Tel Aviv’s “colonial Zionist project.”

On Friday, Israel made headlines by signing an agreement with Somaliland to establish full diplomatic relations, marking a significant step forward in international recognition for the self-declared republic. This agreement includes plans for opening embassies and exchanging ambassadors, fundamentally altering Somaliland’s diplomatic landscape.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 amidst a harrowing civil war, has historically struggled for recognition. Until now, no member of the United Nations had formally acknowledged its statehood. The timing of this recognition raises questions about broader geopolitical strategies in the region.

In a statement released on Saturday, Hamas expressed its outrage, asserting that the Israeli recognition of Somaliland is a violation of international law and undermines the unity and sovereignty of Somalia as a whole. The organization contends that this act is part of a larger agenda by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fragment Arab nations, destabilizing the region while reinforcing colonial ambitions.

Furthermore, Hamas condemned Somaliland for its perceived quest for legitimacy from what they termed a “fascist entity occupying Palestine.” The organization stressed that such recognition reflects Israel’s growing “depth of international isolation,” underscoring the tensions surrounding this diplomatic move.

The government of Somalia did not remain silent in the face of these developments. Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ali Omar, denounced Israel’s actions as an unnecessary interference in Somalia’s internal affairs, demanding a reversal of the recognition. He expressed concerns that Israel’s push for Somaliland’s statehood recognition is closely tied to plans for the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, hinting at a potentially larger crisis.

Echoing these sentiments, Palestine’s foreign ministry issued dire warnings about Israel’s intentions, accusing the state of planning to relocate Palestinians to Somaliland. Hamas has made it clear that they reject any scenario in which Somaliland might serve as a destination for displaced Palestinians, framing it as a “red line” that must not be crossed.

Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, former US President Donald Trump previously indicated a willingness to support Somaliland’s recognition if the region agreed to accept forcibly displaced Palestinians. This highlighted an intersection of geopolitical negotiations and humanitarian dilemmas, suggesting a possibly troubling scenario for both Somalis and Palestinians. In the wake of these claims, Somaliland officials firmly denied any approach regarding the resettlement of Palestinians, asserting their commitment to their own sovereignty.
