On December 20, 2025, the President of Somaliland, Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cabdillaahi (Cirro), took a significant step in addressing the recent violence that erupted in Borama, resulting in the tragic loss of life. Significantly, the committee also includes former Vice Presidents of Somaliland, Cabdiraxmaan Cabdillaahi Ismaaciil (Saylici) and Cabdiraxmaan Aw Cali Faarax. Context of the Violence
The violence in Borama was sparked by youth frustrations related to the approval of a public event under the Xeer Ciise, a traditional law, and the government’s decision to hold the event in Saylac. The tragic outcome was that it resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals and injuries to at least 214 others, indicating the serious nature of the unrest.
