The Complex Issue of Israel’s ‘Recognition’ of Somaliland

Somaliland NewsThe Complex Issue of Israel’s ‘Recognition’ of Somaliland

Somaliland: A De Facto State Navigating Recognition and Controversy

In many ways, Somaliland is a compelling success story amid a tumultuous region characterized by western intervention, persistent destabilization, and the plight of Palestine. Since its unilateral declaration of independence in 1991, Somaliland has risen as a vibrant and self-reliant society, albeit without formal recognition on the world stage. While the Somali government in Mogadishu views this as an illegitimate secession, Somalilanders assert that their grievances stem from years of oppression under the Siad Barre regime, which ruled from 1969 to 1991.

The Complexity of Independence

Upon visiting Somaliland four months ago, I experienced firsthand the daily reality of a self-governing entity that operates effectively as a nation. Arriving at Hargeisa Airport, I was greeted with a Somaliland visa, and locals utilized the Somaliland shilling as their currency. Citizens held Somaliland passports, and the presence of the Somaliland National Army was a visible aspect of the burgeoning country. The head of state, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi—a figure I had fortuitously met during a pilgrimage in 2015—was actively overseeing a government that continues to assert sovereignty.

The Somali administration has not extended a welcoming hand; the last visit of a Somali president to Hargeisa dates back to the split. Notably, the 2020 apology from then-Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo for past atrocities has yet to facilitate a meaningful reconciliation or dialogue.

Navigating the Challenges of Non-Recognition

The hurdles posed by Somaliland’s lack of international recognition were apparent even before boarding my flight from London. Just weeks prior to my journey, the Somali government introduced a new e-visa system, complicating travel for those visiting Somaliland. Now, both tourists and Somalilanders returning to family must navigate the process of acquiring separate visas for Somaliland and Somalia, despite how locals perceive these arrangements.

My experience in Hargeisa revealed a peaceful and welcoming environment, bustling with entrepreneurial spirit. The community thrives—people rise early for prayers, children attend school promptly by 7 AM, and a diaspora of Somalilanders from the UK, Australia, and Scandinavian countries returns home, fostering a sense of optimism.

An Unexpected Shift: Recognition from Israel

In December 2025, intrigue engulfed Somaliland as posters promising a major announcement began appearing throughout Hargeisa. Amid speculation regarding potential recognition by the U.S. government, the situation took an unexpected turn on December 26. A FaceTime call between President Abdirahman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity.

This recognition, tied to the expanding Abraham Accords—a series of normalization treaties initially propelled by the Trump administration—allowed both parties to foresee mutual benefits. Still, this announcement sent shockwaves through the predominantly Muslim population, many of whom had extended substantial support to Palestine in various forms.

Voices of Dissent

Despite the initial approval reflected on social media, murmurs of dissent simmered below the surface. Some factions within Somaliland began expressing apprehension about the implications of aligning themselves with what they view as an oppressive state. Social media hosted discussions on the moral quandaries posed by collaborating with Israel, especially given the ongoing suffering of Palestinians.

Notably, Imam Mohamed Wali Abdirashid spoke out against the government’s direction, warning of the dangers of normalizing relations with Israel. His impassioned speech carried weight within the community but resulted in his detention by Somaliland’s security forces, highlighting the risks associated with open dissent in a region grappling with complex political realities.

The Reality on the Ground

The deal with Israel raised alarm bells regarding potential demographic changes in Somaliland. Rumors circulated about the possibility of resettling Palestinian refugees in the region, a concept that many locals vehemently rejected, viewing it as both impractical and unwelcome.

Concerns also grew around the establishment of an Israeli military presence in Berbera, a strategically located port on the Red Sea. Observations in Berbera revealed a beautiful town with a thriving local economy. Discussions with a young businessman from the UK underscored fears about external interests minimizing the development of local communities.

Strategic Importance and International Relations

The recognition by Israel positioned Somaliland as a pivotal player in the broader geopolitical landscape, especially in relation to ongoing conflicts in Yemen and the involvement of the UAE. As Israel seeks to strengthen ties with regional partners, Somaliland emerges as a potential base of operations for countering threats, a reality fraught with implications for its sovereignty and long-term identity.

The timely recognition also adds a layer of complexity to Somaliland’s aspirations for independence, entangling them in a web of international politics that could reshape not only their own future but also the dynamics within the Horn of Africa.

The Stakes of Recognition

With the current trajectory, Somaliland risks aligning itself with states whose ideologies and actions may not reflect the values of its people. The recent developments underscore the delicate balance Somaliland must navigate as it seeks recognition while staying true to its roots and cultural identity.

Amid ongoing debates and internal struggles for expression, Somaliland’s future remains uncertain, teetering between opportunities for greater recognition and the potential repercussions of international alliances. As the country strives to carve out a distinct identity on the world stage, it faces a pivotal moment in its self-determined journey.
