Swansea has emerged as a rapidly evolving cultural hub for the Nigerian and broader African diaspora in the United Kingdom. This shift has been propelled by the successful launch of the Legacy Voice Experience, an initiative dedicated to amplifying the voices of under-represented artists in the arts scene.
The inaugural event took place in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, and marked an ambitious effort to position this Welsh city as a focal point for cultural regeneration led by the diaspora. It drew attention to the profound impact of Nigerian and African creatives who are reshaping the contemporary cultural landscape in the UK.
Curated by the visionary Olusola Ige, who serves as the founder and Creative Director, the Legacy Voice Experience showcased a variety of artistic expressions, including spoken word, live performances, and immersive storytelling. All participating artists hailed from underrepresented communities, strongly featuring Nigerian and African diaspora creatives. Their work poignantly reflected shared histories, identities, and transnational experiences.
In his speech at the event, Olusola emphasized the initiative’s commitment to establishing Swansea as a platform for cultural expression and a lasting legacy. He stated, “By amplifying Nigerian, African, and other underrepresented diaspora voices, we are building a cultural legacy in Swansea that inspires pride of place and contributes to the UK’s global cultural story.” This declaration underscores the event’s intention to elevate voices that have historically been marginalized.
