World NewsSomaliland Police Confiscate 4 Kilograms of Cannabis | Dawan Africa

Somaliland, 5 November 2025 — In a significant operation that underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking, the Somaliland Police Force successfully intercepted four kilograms of cannabis concealed within food items, en route to the capital city of Hargeisa.

On 3 November, officers at the Tog-Wajaale central police station launched an operation prompted by intelligence regarding drug smuggling activities in the region. The operation culminated in the seizure of the narcotics, which were cleverly disguised among legitimate food supplies and cosmetic products—a tactic aimed at evading security checks.

During a public presentation of the confiscated drugs at the Wajaale district police headquarters, officials elaborated on the circumstances of the seizure. The cannabis originated from Ethiopia, a country notorious for its role in the drug trade, and was being transported toward Somaliland’s capital.

Commander of the Tog-Wajaale Police Station, Abdirisak Adan Farah, emphasized the seriousness of the operation, stating that the intention behind disguising the drugs within food was malicious, targeting the youth of Somaliland. “The narcotics were hidden inside food to harm our youth. The Somaliland police are fully prepared to take firm action against anything that threatens the security and stability of our society,” he articulated with conviction.

The swift action of the police signifies their ongoing commitment to combating drug-related issues in the region. Following the seizure, the suspects involved in this illicit operation were taken into custody at the Wajaale Central Station. Authorities have revealed that further investigations are underway to trace the broader network involved in this drug trafficking scheme.

Geographically, Wajaale sits in northwestern Somaliland, approximately 100 kilometers from Hargeisa, and shares its borders with Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State. This strategic location further complicates the challenge of controlling drug smuggling, given its proximity to both urban centers and rural areas that could easily serve as transit points.

In light of this recent event, the Somaliland Police Force has reiterated the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in identifying and reporting suspicious activities related to drug trafficking. As drug-related crimes continue to pose a significant threat to societal stability, law enforcement remains resolute in their mission to combat this pervasive issue.
