President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Angola, joining Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola to participate in the much-anticipated 7th African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Summit. Set to commence today, the summit offers a platform for dialogue among key leaders and is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday.

Context and Significance of the Summit

This summit unfolds during a time marked by significant global challenges, including threats to peace, ongoing conflicts, and a growing trend of unilateralism among certain countries. The Presidency highlighted the importance of this meeting, emphasizing the critical nature of collaboration between Africa and Europe to address these issues. The summit aims to foster dialogue, aiming to enhance political and economic relations between the two continental bodies.

Recent Successes Under South Africa’s Leadership

The summit comes shortly after South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg—an event that highlighted President Ramaphosa’s leadership. Under the framework of the G20, South Africa successfully brought together nations to discuss pressing global concerns, illustrating the significant role of both the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) in achieving consensus on key economic and societal challenges.

Focus on AU Agenda 2063

As a member of the AU, South Africa is set to prioritize securing support from the EU for the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan (STYIP) of the AU Agenda 2063. This agenda is pivotal for the continent, aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth and development. The collaboration with the EU is essential for unlocking resources and strategies to implement the ambitious goals outlined by the AU.

Thematic Sessions: Key Areas of Focus

The summit will feature two main plenary thematic sessions designed to tackle critical issues:

  • Thematic Session I: Peace, Security, and Governance and Multilateralism
This session will focus on strengthening governance frameworks and addressing security challenges, advocating for multilateral approaches to conflict resolution.

  • Thematic Session II: Prosperity, People—Migration and Mobility
Addressing the complexities surrounding migration and mobility, this session will explore economic opportunities and social policies that can enhance human welfare and prosperity in both regions.

Leadership Representation

The event will be chaired by President João Lourenço of Angola, who serves as the Chairperson of the AU. He will be joined by notable figures, including His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the AU Commission. The European representation includes António Costa, the President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, along with leaders from various EU member states, including Denmark, France, Hungary, and Germany.

This assembly of leaders, both from Africa and Europe, signifies a unified effort to create pathways for collaboration that address shared challenges and foster mutual prosperity.

Looking Ahead

As the summit unfolds, the discussions and agreements reached are poised to impact the political and economic landscape of both Africa and Europe well beyond the immediate timeframe of the meeting. The collaborative spirit at the AU-EU Summit serves as a reminder that united efforts can effectively address even the most daunting of challenges faced by the global community today.
