Africa NewsPresident Ramaphosa Arrives in Angola for the AU-EU Summit

Seventh African Union-European Union Summit: A Milestone in Global Cooperation

On November 24, 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa landed in Luanda, Angola, to partake in the Seventh African Union-European Union Summit. This significant gathering takes place over two days, marking an important anniversary in international relations—the 25th year of partnership between the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU). The event represents not only a celebration of collaboration but also a critical platform for addressing contemporary global challenges.

A Legacy of Partnership

The partnership between the AU and EU was established during the inaugural summit in Cairo, Egypt, in 2000, originally branded as the “EU-Africa Partnership.” Over the years, this relationship has evolved, culminating in its transformation into the AU-EU Summit format in 2017, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This evolution reflects a growing recognition of the interdependence between Africa and Europe in facing global issues.

Global Challenges in Focus

The Seventh AU-EU Summit convenes against a backdrop of complex global challenges. These include not just the pressing issues of peace and security, but also the impacts of unilateralism that threaten collaborative international frameworks. As conflicts rage in various corners of the globe, the need for united, multi-lateral approaches becomes even more evident.

Building on Recent Successes

Interestingly, this summit follows South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. Under President Ramaphosa’s leadership, South Africa played a pivotal role in achieving consensus on critical global economic and humanitarian issues during the year-long G20 Presidency. This previous success provides a solid foundation for the discussions at the AU-EU Summit, indicating that the two regions can work together effectively on a range of pressing matters.

A Focus on Development Goals

During the summit, South Africa aims to rally EU support for the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan (STYIP) of the AU Agenda 2063. This Agenda serves as a blueprint for Africa’s development, envisioning an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful continent. The partnership with the EU is vital in this endeavor, as it seeks to pool resources and knowledge for mutual benefit.

Leadership on the World Stage

The summit will feature distinguished leaders from both regions. President João Lourenço of Angola will serve as the Chairperson of the AU, while His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf heads the AU Commission. The European contingent will be represented by prominent figures such as António Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Leaders from various EU member states, including Denmark, France, and Germany, will also attend, signifying the high level of commitment to this partnership.

Thematic Sessions: Cooperation at the Core

The structure of the summit includes two key Plenary Thematic Sessions.

  1. Peace, Security, and Governance and Multilateralism: This session aims to address pressing concerns related to stability and governance in both regions, focusing on how multilateralism can provide solutions to these challenges.

  2. Prosperity, People – Migration and Mobility: This session will tackle economic cooperation, including migration issues, thereby emphasizing the links between prosperity and mobility.

These thematic discussions are crucial, as they reflect the core areas of mutual interest and established cooperation between the AU and EU.

Key Players in Attendance

President Ramaphosa is attending alongside Mr. Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. Their presence underscores the commitment of South Africa to fostering a robust relationship with the EU, as both regions seek to strengthen their political and economic ties.

The Seventh African Union-European Union Summit is poised to be a pivotal event, focused on addressing contemporary challenges while celebrating a quarter-century of collaborative efforts. The engagement between these two significant regions is not merely symbolic; it serves as a blueprint for future cooperation, aiming for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
