Renovation of a Basketball Court: A Step Towards Empowering African Youth

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) and Wave Côte d’Ivoire have recently unveiled a newly renovated basketball court at 4 Paniers (Four Baskets) in the bustling Yopougon district of Abidjan. This renovation is not just a mere upgrade; it symbolizes a collaborative effort aimed at bringing the sport closer to communities in Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal. It aligns with NBA Africa’s ambitious goal to build or renovate 1,000 basketball courts across the continent over the next decade, showcasing a commitment to fostering youth engagement through sports.

A Community-Centric Initiative

At the opening ceremony, Wave Côte d’Ivoire General Manager Katier Bamba and BAL Head of League Operations Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje spoke passionately about the transformative power of basketball. This event was not merely about the unveiling of a court; it included a dynamic basketball clinic that welcomed 50 boys and girls aged 16 and under from local schools and a U-23 3-on-3 tournament that featured both male and female players. These activities were designed to encourage participation and provide young people with a platform to showcase their skills.

Boumtje-Boumtje emphasized the importance of these joint efforts, stating, “The renovation of this court reflects our commitment to working with partners like Wave to empower the youth of Africa.” It’s clear that the intention behind this initiative goes beyond the tangible renovations; it aims to create lasting positive impacts in communities throughout the region.

Wave’s Role: Bridging Communities Through Sports

Wave Côte d’Ivoire’s involvement in the court renovation is rooted in its mission to support and invest in local communities. Bamba articulated a vision that positions basketball not just as a sport but as a vehicle for social change. “Basketball is a powerful force for connecting communities,” she noted. “We are proud to contribute to the creation of modern, accessible spaces where young people can learn, play, and thrive.” This sentiment resonates deeply, indicating that the renovation transcends physical structures; it represents an investment in the confidence and aspirations of the next generation.

Collaborative Events and Future Ambitions

Since their partnership began in March 2025, the BAL and Wave have been actively engaging the youth through several initiatives, including “Tournoi des Quartiers” basketball tournaments held in both Abidjan and Dakar, Senegal. These community-focused events not only offer a competitive spirit—with a significant prize pool of 1,000,000 CAF for winning teams—but also provide priceless opportunities for young players, such as an all-expenses-paid trip for Reine Esther Yao from the U-18 Côte d’Ivoire Women’s National Team to attend the 2025 BAL Finals in Pretoria, South Africa.

Such collaborations are crucial in nurturing talent and promoting the sport across the continent. They reflect a broader vision of creating a robust basketball culture in Africa, where local communities can connect through shared passion and values.

Since its inception, the BAL has successfully concluded its fifth season in June 2025, further entrenching its role as a pivotal organization in the African basketball landscape. Based in Dakar, Senegal, the league stands as the NBA’s inaugural effort to establish a professional sports league outside North America, creating a unique space for African talent and entertainment.
